Only one sexual assault was reported on or near Macalester's campus last year, down from three the year before, according to the most recent annual report released by Macalester Safety and Security. Yet instead of taking this as a confirmation of the safeness of our school, perhaps instead the statistic reflects a sobering truth, that the majority of sexual assaults go unreported.

Two distinguished professors graced John B. Davis Lecture Hall Monday evening to discuss advertising and campaign messages. University of Minnesota Communication Studies professor Karlyn Kohrs Campbell, who focused on the Senatorial race between Al Franken and incumbent Senator Norm Coleman, was joined by her co-author on two books, Kathleen Hall Jamieson.

Career Development on Employment: "Prepare without panic"
Uncertain employment possibilities are worrying Mac seniors and graduates. Macalester's Career Development Center (CDC) is responding to those fears by trying to connect seniors with recruiters, although it's still early to predict the effect of the rollercoaster economy on job prospects.

Macalester's Election Action Center, located upstairs in the Campus Center, will be open during all Campus Center hours between now and Election Day and will serve as a hub for the election-related activities of campus and community organizations. The Election Action Center (EAC) is the product of the Mac Voter Coalition, an organization with representatives from Macalester College Student Government, MacDems and Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG).

Though the effort to "get out the vote" for Obama has been non-stop on Macalester's campus as of late, come election day some students will be voting for a third party candidate or not voting at all.
"It will sort of depend on how I feel [on election day]," Brendan Rogers '10 said.

Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG) chapters throughout the state have succeeded in registering 15,000 youth voters this election season, 450 of whom are Macalester students.
"Youth voter turnout is going to be huge," said MPIRG professional organizer Amber Collett, citing Minnesota's track record of high turnout and the 20 percent increase in turnout from 2000 to 2004.
