Last semester, the Macalester student body voted to put $50,000 in rollover money towards construction of an ice rink on campus. Now the Macalester Ice Rink Committee faces a number of barriers to getting the rink off the ground, including a disagreement with Facilities about the project's feasibility.
On Feb. 4, the Educational Policy and Governance committee (EPAG) released a report stating that eight of its nine voting members had reached a consensus to recommend the discontinuance of Russian Studies at Macalester. Sonita Sarker, a Professor of English and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, was the only voting EPAG member to not concur with the recommendation.
Tuition hikes and improved market allay financial worries
The new budget for the 2012-13 academic year shows that Macalester is performing well financially. In 2009, projections predicted a budget shortfall of approximately $5 million by 2014. Current projections, however, show income and expenses to be in line for 2013. Increases in tuition and improved financial markets have eliminated the projected deficit.
Mary Moore Easter, poet and former professor of Dance and Performing Arts at Carleton College, delivered the keynote address for Black History Month Tuesday night to a crowd of nearly 50 students, staff and administrators. In her speech titled "How Big is Your Black," Moore Easter explored the evolution of her understanding of blackness and engaged with the audience about moments when their own personal senses of blackness shifted.
President Rosenberg to match donations up to $1,000
FaceAIDS, a student organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds to fight HIV/AIDS, will host a fashion show next Friday to raise money for a Malaysian nonprofit. Organizers of the event are touting an expected $1,000 donation from President Brian Rosenberg.
Longtime Program Board member Will Johnson '13 was elected Program Board chair for the 2012/2013 school-year. Program Board held elections early this year, allowing Johnson time to shadow the current chair before he takes over the post in the fall. This week The Mac Weekly sat down with Johnson to chat about his experiences with the board and his plans for next year.
