City Council incumbents dominate in primary elections

All of St. Paul's City Council incumbents bested their challengers in a primary election Tuesday that attracted just a five percent turnout, or 5,584 votes. The low turnout figures marked one of the smallest elections to take place in St. Paul in the last 30 years, the Pioneer Press reported.
Marginally competitive elections took place in just two of the city's seven wards. Ward 3, where Macalester is located, was not home to a primary contest. Incumbent Councilor Pat Harris will face off in November against challenger Gerald Mischke, who is no longer actively campaigning.
Tuesday's election was a primary to sift out challengers in advance of November's general election.
Correction: The Mac Weekly originally reported that a primary contest had taken place in Ward 3. A primary did not take place because the Ward 3 contest was already between two challengers.
