Two weeks after the Faculty Personnel Committee denied tenure to Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies professor Scott Morgensen and French professor Diane Brown in mid-December, Morgensen and Brown filed intents to appeal their tenure decisions. This year, of the seven professors that were up for tenure, only Morgensen and Brown were denied.

The Board of Trustees approved a tuition increase and conducted primarily financial business during their January conference. Macalester will announce the specific details of the budget and tuition increase after President Brian Rosenberg releases the change in a letter mailed to the parents of current students.

The Academic Affairs Commission hopes to simplify the process of purchasing textbooks with a new proposal placed before the legislative body that would convert Macalester identification cards into credit cards.
The credit card would alleviate cash flow dilemmas that some students experience when buying textbooks, and could also be used at locations campus wide.

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., spoke to a crowd of 90 Tuesday afternoon in Kagin Commons, encouraging the audience to support Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill, in the Minn. caucuses on Feb. 5. The event was orchestrated by Mac for Obama and drew students, faculty and community members to hear Daschle speak about the candidate as a person as well as his plans to increase access to higher education and health care and unite the country.

Eleven students at this wintry Brunswick, Maine college may face piracy suits this semester for uploading or downloading music illegally through peer-to-peer sites like Kazaa and Limewire. The Recording Industry Association of America served the students with pre-litigation letters and a spokesperson from the RIAA told The Orient, Bowdoin's student newspaper, that students who decide to settle will likely be fined between $3,000 and $5,000.
