Macalester College Student Government, the Civic Engagement Center and College Relations are helping to facilitate the annual "Day at the Capital" on March 6, an event hosted by Minnesota's Private Colleges.

The event offers students, faculty and staff an opportunity to meet with Minnesota legislators at the State Capitol and discuss a possible expansion of the State Grant program.

The State Grant program provides need-based scholarships to 80,000 students in Minnesota. Ninety-two Macalester students currently receive a total of $357,000 in State Grant aid, which averages out to an approximate $3,879 per student.

"Support of the Grant Program is both an important social justice issue and important to individual Macalester students," Pierangelo Rossi '08, Consuelo Gutierrez-Crosby, student leadership coordinator of the Civic Engagement Center, and Doug Stone, director of College Relations, wrote in an email.

Students will be at the Capitol on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with vans leaving campus at 10 a.m.
