Rosenberg, Samatar address student IGC concerns
President Brian Rosenberg and Professor Ahmed Samatar hosted a discussion Tuesday in the Chapel to respond to student questions and concerns regarding the Institute for Global Citizenship. The IGC, the most ambitious programmatic endeavor in Rosenberg's five-year tenure at Macalester, was the subject of a March 7 Mac Weekly editorial asking the Institute's deans to help explain the role of the IGC.

Tray elected MCSG President
Alison Tray '09 received 64 percent of the 542 votes cast on Wednesday to win the election for Macalester College Student Government president in the 2008-09 academic year. Martin Mudry '09 won 56 percent of the vote for Academic Affairs Committee chair in the only other contested race.

MCSG reviews drinking policy

A resolution that would make Residential Hall directors, and not Residential Assistants, responsible for alcohol policy enforcement passed at the Macalester Student Government Legislative Body's meeting Tuesday night. An amendment added by Andrew Mirzayi '10, a sophomore class representative and MCSG Vice President- elect, will establish a taskforce of MCSG members, Residential Life staff, administration members and students to evaluate the college's current alcohol policy and its effect on the Macalester community.

Devlin-Foltz selected as Commencement speaker

The student speaker for this year's Commencement will be Zachary Devlin-Foltz '08, a political science and economics double major, who is also one of Macalester's two Watson Fellowship recipients this year. The senior speaker is chosen by a selection committee, comprised of two graduating seniors, two faculty members, the Dean of Students and the Dean of Academic Programs.

Orientation seeks to build class unity

The Fall 2008 first-year orientation will be marked by efforts to promote increased interaction between international and domestic students. Now, domestic roommates of international first-years will be invited to attend the international orientation, which typically falls a few days before the general first-year orientation begins.

RAs return at record rate, but new applicants low

This year's Residential Assistant recruitment process drew a record number of returning RAs but much smaller numbers of new applicants than expected, a sharp contrast to last year. For the 33 Residential Assistant and Community Assistant positions open this year, 23 returning RAs applied and 21 were hired.

Rosenberg addresses faculty issues in letter

As the college continues its search for a new provost, it is also considering a review of the college's faculty governing structure. In a seven-page letter to the faculty, issued last month, President Brian Rosenberg expressed his concerns and opinions about the effectiveness of the existing faculty government and suggested an evaluation of the relationship between faculty scholarship and teaching.

English department looks to find stability under new leadership

High faculty turnover rates, confusion and disunity between students and professors and hardly any departmental activities to bring students together. This was the English department of the last few years. The descent was precipitated by a number of factors, not the least of which was a large numbers of professors leaving the department for several years, resulting in an influx of visiting instructors.

MCSG President Franz Meyer '09 to serve as student liaison to the Board of Trustees

When student government president Franz Meyer '09 succeeds Blythe Austin '08 next year as Macalester's second student liaison to the Board of Trustees, he will emphasize student-trustee communication and will work to train the student representatives on the Board's committees.

Springfest will host local bands, mechanical bull, bounce house

Finding a home for Springfest proved to be a bit of a challenge this year, but now that students and administrators have agreed on Shaw Field, Springfest Coordinator Dan Truchan '09 said it will be "the best Springfest ever." Springfest, which will be held on April 19, will feature a lineup of both local and out-of-state bands, including Bugz in the Dark, The Blend, Dance Band, White Light Riot, Os Passistas Samba Group and Yo Majesty.

Class of 2012 covers all U.S. states except Delaware, shows more applicants from China, Korea

The familiar "Yes Macalester" letters have been sent to the admitted class of 2012 over the past few weeks, with a record 5,040 applicants that the college eventually dwindled down to 480 students. The class covers a wide geographic area including 91 countries, 49 states, Washington D.

SAAC?hosts 90s themed ball

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Ball will be held this Saturday, April 12 at 10 p.m. in the Olin Rice Smail Gallery. "The event has a 90s/prom/tacky high school dance inspired theme that could really be interpreted in many ways," said Marisa Raether '08, President of SAAC, in an email.

Tulane University Talk about overdue library books. After a two and a half year wait, 210,000 library books will be returned to the Howard Tilton Memorial Library, the main library at this New Orleans school. The items were removed and restored after Hurricane Katrina laid havoc on the collection.

The Green Beat

Though we've come a long way in the past few years towards achieving a more sustainable campus, Macalester is still one of the most polluting colleges in the area. The reason: #6 fuel oil, a heavy residual fuel oil with the consistency of tar that is produced from what is left over after gasoline and other lighter distilled fuels have been extracted.
