Police charge protesters with 'conspiracy to commit a riot'

As many as nine current Macalester students and at least one alumna were arrested at the Republican National Convention last week, some of the 800 total arrests made on protesters during the four-day event.
The exact number of Macalester students and alumni arrested during the convention remains unknown, but at press time the Dean of Students Office understood it to be less than ten.

While the U.S. may not be switching over from inches to meters just yet, minor cultural differences such as this can often be reflective of larger divisions between Macalester students. Acknowledging this pressing issue, members of International Student Programs created Ametrica as a way to cultivate stronger relationships between international and domestic students.

This past summer, 129 college presidents signed the Amethyst Initiative, which calls for a reconsideration of the drinking age-that is, lowering it. President, Brian Rosenberg, chose not to sign it. On August 8, the former Soviet Republic of Georgia sent troops into the breakaway region of South Ossetia. In response, Russia invaded Georgia, quickly driving out the Georgian military from both South Ossetia and another breakaway region, Abkhazia. Western governments condemned Russia's actions, but the Kremlin stood firm, withdrawing its troops on its own timeline to "buffer zones" which it decided for itself by Aug.

While elements of card access have been at Macalester for 18 years, the whole campus has not yet been converted from the lock-and-key system.
