An emergency measure on the agenda for this week's Board of Trustees meeting has sparked unrest among some Macalester students about their role in the school's decision making. The measure would allocate $7.5 million to be spent on a new air conditioning system, but members of the Macalester Conservation and Renewable Energy Society, or MacCARES, are questioning the transparency of the process.

Moderated by Jane Rhodes, the dean of race and ethnicity, student activists Kyera Singleton '11, Thuto Thipe '10, Peter Valelly '11 and David Seitz '10 began the discussion by detailing their involvement in various organizations including Students for a Democratic Society, Black Liberation Affairs Committee, Feminists in Action-Students Together Against Rape and Sexual Assault.

A $50,000 grant from the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation will give Macalester students the opportunity to explore citizen engagement and engage in dialogue about politically related issues.
Robin Ruthenbeck, associate director for campus programs, said she sees this as an opportunity to redefine what it means to be political so that it becomes something more than just voting.

The Career Development Center is currently in the process of launching a new program aimed at helping sophomores make the most of the school year. Titled the Sophomore Initiative, the program joins already existing programs for first-years, juniors and seniors.
