Men’s tennis has high hopes for their season

On Tuesday evening I had the opportunity to sit down with the top five players on the men's tennis team (Chris Fowler '12, Evan Elderbrock '12, Lewis Wilcox '12, Max Edwards '13 and Stephen Tyndel '13) to discuss everything from jellybeans to pot roast and grunting.

Seniors lead resilient women’s basketball season

Just two games shy of a .500 conference record, women's basketball fell to St. Benedict 48-60 on Wednesday but will look to trounce Hamline for a second time during Saturday's regular season closer.

On Linsanity: the rise of a legend

Lebron James is literally jumping over defenders for the 23-7 Miami Heat. Chris Paul is throwing alley-oops to Blake Griffin for the 17-9 Los Angeles Clippers. Despite Dwight Howard's demands to be traded, the Orlando Magic are still 18-11. So why are the 14-15 New York Knicks, a team that lost 11 out of 13 games earlier this season, the talk of the NBA?

Two words. Jeremy Lin.

Men’s basketball learns from struggles, looks to future

It's safe to say that the Macalester men's basketball team has had a bad year. A record of 1-21 with three games left in the regular season speaks for itself. Record-wise, this team has hit rock bottom. That being said, the Scots are incredibly young and have a lot of potential for the future. They have one of the best players in the MIAC, Pierce Peters '13, and many of the sophomores and freshmen have logged a significant number of minutes this season.

Women’s basketball hosts the Pink Zone

This Saturday the women's basketball team is thinking pink. During Feb. 11's 3 p.m. game against Gustavus Adolphus the team will host the annual Pink Zone event to support breast cancer research. All donations will be given to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Rookie sensation fuels Timberwolves turnaround

The Minnesota Timberwolves have won more games than they have lost. Note to reader: this is not a typo. As of press time on Wednesday night, the Timberwolves had a record of 13-12, marking the first time the team has been above .500 after 25 games in the last six years.

Michele Cornish to lead program

On Wednesday morning, Macalester announced the hiring of new women's head soccer coach Michele Cornish. A search of several months led the athletics department to hand the reigns of the women's program to Cornish, who will take over from interim head coach Jemma Perkins. In her only season at the helm, Perkins guided the team to a MIAC Conference tournament berth in a season marred by injuries.

An update and the men's and women's swimming and diving seasons

Why baseball is different: Moneyball

I watched Moneyball a few weeks ago. As a baseball fanatic, I failed because I waited months to see the film. I'll cut myself some slack because I was at college when it came out, but I still waited four weeks after being home to watch it. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Moneyball. Lately, it seems most movie trailers are about the world ending. It's safe to say that watching a movie about a group of baseball nerds plotting to beat the Yankees was a refreshing change of pace and a bit more up my alley.

Women’s basketball starts conference schedule

Expectations are high for the Scots after their successful 2010-11 season and playoff berth. Despite losing All-MIAC Majra Mucic '11 to graduation, the team has started off the young season by winning two out of three non-conference games. In addition to finishing second in the University of Chicago Tip-Off Tournament, the team registered double-digit victories against Benedictine and Northwestern.

Play ball: NBA back in action after lockout’s resolved

Beginning on July 1, the National Basketball Association went into the fourth lockout in its history. What exactly the lockout was, few knew. What mattered is that it meant no professional basketball until the players and owners could come to terms on a re-structuring of the league's revenue sharing and salary cap structure. As an NBA fan (and Timberwolves fan in hiding), I was concerned when I first heard about the lockout, but as the NBA season doesn't start until late October, I had no doubt that the players and owners would be able to pound out a deal in four months.

The Mac Weekly runs in stride with women’s cross country

The Macalester women's cross country team wrapped up its season this past weekend at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships in Waverly, Ia. Despite injuries, Mac women’s soccer advances to postseason

On Monday afternoon in the opening round of the MIAC women's soccer tournament, the Macalester women's team played neck and neck with top-seeded St. Ben's through 90 minutes of regulation and two overtimes, before falling 0-2 in a shootout. However, the final score of the game doesn't do justice to the team's season – a three-month journey with more ups and downs than the Rockies.

Short shorts and suffering. Both are synonymous with cross country. The Macalester men's cross country team, better known as The Mac Pack, has mastered both. The Mac Pack is an eclectic collection of characters that can be seen running around campus (and far beyond) wearing as few clothes as possible.

Scots scoreboard: Volleyball wins biggest game of season

A recap of recent Macalester sports' wins and losses

Despite recent success, Tebow will ultimately fail

Before I start listing reasons why I think Tim Tebow will be an unsuccessful NFL quarterback, I want to first explain that I am in no way ‘hating' on Timmy. Personally, I love the guy. By all accounts, he's a great teammate and an even better human being. He's one of the most popular players in the league (he had the fifth highest-selling jersey amongst NFL players last year) and is, as my good friend Caitlin Opperman '12 once put it, ‘dashing'. However, I ultimately believe he's going to be regarded as a bust.

The ‘Dark Goat’: A Mac soccer superfan for the ages

There are few certainties in this crazy world. Death. The rising and setting sun. And the "Dark Goat" screaming his head off at Macalester soccer games. Anyone who has ever gone to a Mac soccer game is sure to have taken notice of and been inspired by the "Dark Goat." But a precious few know the story of this Mac legend. After getting to know the man behind the legend at games this fall, I decided it was time to share his story. On Tuesday afternoon, I sat down with the 'Goat aka Grimace to discuss everything from soccer to politics to drinking blood, smoking crack and worshipping Satan.

TMW talks with the championship-winning men of the ManTrodome

For the past two years, Willy Raedy '13, Jesse Yourish '13, Hank Hansen '13, Joe Macula '13 and Shane Levy '13 have taken home championship t-shirts from the 3-on-3 Intramural Basketball Championships.  The five men have seen their team name change from the ManCave to the ManSion to the ManTrodome over the past three years, but one thing has remained constant up to this year: winning.  I recently interviewed the members of the ManTrodome and asked them about one another, last year's championship victory, and the upcoming season.
