Scots scoreboard: Volleyball wins biggest game of season

Volleyball

The Scots rallied through five sets Saturday to beat top-ranked Bethel 3-2. The women knocked Bethel out of first place with a hard fought victory at home. Laura Avena '14 had 23 kills on the match while Glasha Marcon '13 led the defense with 20 digs. This win broke the lady Scots' 12-game losing streak. Unfortunately, the team suffered a setback Wednesday against St. Olaf, dropping all three games.

Football

The Scots suffered a tough 23-17 loss to Carleton in overtime this past Saturday. Tied at 17 at the end of the fourth quarter, after a fumble recovery by Carleton, a missed field goal by the Scots at the start of overtime gave the Knights the momentum to score on their first offensive play. Carleton reclaimed the prized Book of Knowledge trophy for the ninth year in a row. Despite a disappointing end, the Scots saw admirable performances from T. Joe Loiselle '12 who ran 28 times for 120 yards and quarterback Clark Bledsoe '13 who completed 19 of 37 passes for 188 yards and ran 11 yards for a touchdown. Nate Sands '13 led the defense with 15 tackles.

Men's soccer

A header from Taylor Rasmussen '13 off a corner kick by Robin Forslund '14 gave the Scots a 1-0 win in double overtime against St. Mary's last Tuesday. The Scots' sit 6-3 in the MIAC, keeping their playoff dreams alive, but Saturday's away game against Gustavus is a must win. The team will lean heavily on their senior leadership to pull through late in the season.

Women's soccer

The women's soccer squad kept their playoff hopes alive with a 1-0 win over St. Mary's on Wednesday night at Macalester Stadium. In a must-win game, Georgia Cloepfil '14 scored her fourth goal of the season on a header off of a perfect corner kick from Margaret Nemetz '15 in the first half. The Scots weathered a few scares in the second half thanks to exceptional play by goalie Rosie Glen-Finer '13. On the night before fall break, the stands were rocking with a strong student turnout. Per usual, The "Dark Goat" led the Mac faithful in raucous cheers on the chilly night.

Men's and Women's cross country

After a week of tapering to prepare for the conference championships, both the men and women will compete this Saturday at Como Park in St. Paul. Leading the pack on the men's side this season are Michael Waltman '15 and Joe Giamberdino '15, while Anna French '13 and Anna Schmitz '14 will be runners to watch on the women's team.
